Montgomery County is an economic powerhouse, leading the state in high-tech and manufacturing employment. The county's economy is very diverse. Major industries include mutual funds, pharmaceuticals, insurance, computer design, and education. Overall, the county had approximately 500,000 jobs in 2000, with 77,000 more jobs expected by 2025. Although the county as a whole is economically strong, we do have some areas with challenges, including struggling downtowns, underutilized areas, and marginal shopping centers. The Economic Development Plan gives shows how the county can keep a strong economy while directing growth and development to developed areas that need new employment, shopping venues, and tax ratables.
